About NASS Committees

Many important NASS initiatives are conceived and carried out by the organization's business and operating committees, which are comprised of volunteer members and supported by association staff. In addition to the NASS Executive Board, the association has standing committees and ad hoc issues task forces that report to committees of jurisdiction.  Several operating committees also support the general goals of NASS.

NASS committees are typically comprised of two co-chairs, each representing different political parties.  There are no limits on the number of committees to which a state member may belong. When appropriate, the committees develop policy positions for consideration by the full membership.

  • Executive Board:  Appointed annually by the NASS President and approved by member vote, the Executive Board is the chief governing body of NASS.  The President and President-elect are of opposite political parties and rotate on an annual basis.  The Executive Board meets at least twice a year.

  • Elections Committee:  The Elections Committee is dedicated to educating and informing NASS members about policies and practices related to election administration at both the state and federal level. This includes tracking proposed federal legislation and election reform proposals and following the activities of relevant federal agencies and congressional committees. The Committee also provides a forum for members to discuss strategies for facilitating voter participation and share innovative practices on voter education and outreach.

  • Business Services Committee:  The Business Services Committee is dedicated to educating and informing NASS members about state practices regarding corporate registrations, electronic business filings, notarizations, Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings, and other related services.  This Committee follows the activities of relevant federal agencies and congressional committees.  Business identity theft awareness and prevention are also part of this Committee's work.

  • Cybersecurity Committee: The Cybersecurity Committee is dedicated to facilitating information sharing by NASS members about policies and practices regarding cybersecurity at the state, local and federal level. The Committee provides a forum for members to share practices and learn about new developments in state and federal legislation, academic research, advocacy community and congressional committee activity, new and existing private-sector tools, and resources provided by federal agencies. The committee will focus on cybersecurity as it relates to all facets of member offices to include business services, election administration, records management and archiving.

  • Securities Committee:  The Securities Committee is tasked with reviewing the actions of the North American Securities Administrators (NASAA) and other stakeholder organizations, including Congress and relevant federal agencies, with an interest in securities regulation by states.

  • State Records and Archives:  The State Records and Archives Committee provides a forum for members to share information and best practices regarding state heritage programs and venues, including:  state archives, museums, libraries, historical sites and state records.  Digital preservation of documents is also a key issue for this body.  Members work with the Council of State Archivists (CoSA), Society of American Archivists (SAA) and the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA), as well as the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

  • International Relations Committee: The International Relations Committee serves as an educational forum for members interested in learning more about international relations, including state and federal approaches to international protocol, commerce/global markets, diplomacy and the development of U.S. foreign policy. Committee members are dedicated to strengthening NASS alliances with key institutions, including the U.S. Department of State and the United Nations.

  • Nominations & Credentials Committee:  The Nominations & Credentials Committee oversees the selection of the association's national officers at the annual summer meeting.
