National Association of Secretaries of State Inducts National Officers for 2012-2013

Nevada Secretary of State Ross J. Miller Sworn in as NASS President, Names New Executive Board

San Juan, PR – The National Association of Secretaries of State, currently holding its annual summer conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, today inducted its new slate of national officers for the 2012-2013 cycle. Nevada Secretary of State Ross J. Miller will serve as president through July 2013, marking only the second time in the association's 108-year history that a Nevada Secretary of State has held the position.

"It's an honor and a humbling opportunity to lead NASS, this nation's oldest organization of major elected officials," said Miller during his swearing-in ceremony. "The Secretaries of State across the country are some of the best positioned officials to promote non-partisan, good government.  At a time like this in our country, as we prepare for a national election, our responsibilities as chief elections officers in our respective states become all the more significant.  I look forward to taking an active leadership role in addressing the myriad issues NASS will face in the coming year."

As a member of NASS, Miller has been involved in presidential primary and voting issues, civic education, business services and small business development, securities regulation and international relations. He is also a member of two national task forces designed to study business-related issues: the NASS Company Formation Task Force and the NASS Business Identity Theft Task Force, which promotes identity theft prevention strategies among the business community in every state.

NOTE: An air-ready VO/SOT for television stations featuring Secretary Miller is available on the NASS Conference Media Page at this link.

As president of NASS, Miller will lead a slate of executive officers and committee co-chairs who oversee the association's activities for the coming year (through July 2013). The NASS 2012-2013 Executive Board includes:

President: Hon. Ross J. Miller, Nevada
President-Elect: Hon. Tre Hargett, Tennessee
Immediate Past President: Hon. Beth Chapman, Alabama
Treasurer: Hon. Kate Brown, Oregon
Secretary: Hon. Elaine Marshall, North Carolina
Eastern Region Vice President: Hon. Jeffrey Bullock, Delaware
Southern Region Vice President: Hon. Brian Kemp, Georgia
Midwestern Region Vice President: Hon. Jon Husted, Ohio
Western Region Vice President: Hon. Linda McCulloch, Montana

The association also announced today that its members have selected victims' rights advocate and creator/host of the television show "America's Most Wanted" John Walsh as the recipient of the 2012 Margaret Chase Smith American Democracy Award for acts of political courage. Walsh will be honored for his tireless efforts to help missing and exploited children, which include his founding of the Adam Walsh Resource Center (later merged with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and lobbying efforts on behalf of crime victims. Walsh's efforts to lobby Congress resulted in the passage of two federal acts and the creation of a national database on missing children, as well as a national hotline to report/help locate missing children.

Walsh will be invited to receive the NASS award at the association's January 2013 winter meeting in Washington, DC.
