NASS Declares Sept. 2010 National Voter Registration Month

State Voter Registration Deadlines for the November 2 Election Are Approaching

Washington, DC - NASS President Matt Dunlap of Maine joined fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of States today in declaring September 2010 as National Voter Registration Month. Dunlap and other secretaries of state are working with federal, state and local officials in making the nation’s eligible voters aware of registration deadlines and requirements for the November 2 general election, as well as promoting state resources to help with the registration process. Eligible citizens who plan to vote this November are urged to submit their voter registration information without delay.

"Now is the time to get registered to vote. The process is easier, faster and more convenient than ever before," said Dunlap, who was sworn in as NASS president in July 2010. “If you are already registered to vote, you should check your voter registration status using the online tool offered in most states, or visit www.canivote.org for help. If your information is outdated or incorrect, there is plenty of time to get it straightened out with your local election office so you can vote on November 2.”

NASS members established National Voter Registration Month to encourage voter participation and to increase awareness about state voter registration requirements and deadlines. Nearly half of all states (plus the District of Columbia) will close their voter registration for this year’s general election during the first week of October.

According to U.S. Census figures for 2008, fourteen percent of non-voters said they did not vote because they missed their state’s voter registration deadline. Overall, 60 million eligible voters did not register that year.

In urging eligible citizens to register and update their voter registration information, states will spend the month of September highlighting their resources to assist with these efforts.

Forty states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, offer voter registration lookups designed to help voters check their registration status online.

Eight states (Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Wyoming) and the District of Columbia now offer Election Day registration, while North Carolina and Ohio will offer same-day registration during each state's early voting period.

Eight states (Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Oregon, Utah and Washington) allow voter registration and registration updates via the Internet. Nevada is also offering online registration for Clark County residents who are eligible to vote in November, with plans to expand to the rest of the state for future elections.

New for this year, NASS and Tangent Media LLC have released a Can I Vote widget that allows Internet users throughout the U.S. to directly access official, nonpartisan registration and voting information that is specific to where they live. It functions much like the association’s Can I Vote website, www.canivote.org, which offers links to state and local election websites, election official contact information, and more.
